Taormina Arte ends with a homage to Leonard Bernstein

On Monday 25th August Taormina Arte 2008 ends with a concert dedicates to the great conductor Leonard Bernstein. A night wanted by the artistic director of Taormina Arte's Music-Dance Section, Enrico Castiglione. Some of the best pages by Bernstein from West Side Story , Candide, Wonderful Town played by Teatro Vittorio Emanuele Orchestra from Messina conducted by Steven Mercurio and with the participation of the soprano Marquita Lister. Lorin Maazel and Toscanini Symphony Orchestra in the Nine Symphonies by Beethoven

An extraordinary event at the Ancient Theatre from 19 to 23 August Lorin Maazel conducts the Toscanini Symphony Orchestra in all the Nine Symphonies by Beethoven. It's the first time that it happens in Europe: 5 evenings nine concerts played by one of the best Italian Orchestra conducted for this occasion of one of the most famous conductors. [link]


At the Ancient Theatre a flamenco night

Flamenco is a Spanish musical genre with strong, rhythmic undertones and is often accompanied with a similarly impassioned style of dance characterized by its powerful yet graceful execution, as well as its intricate hand and footwork. Flamenco embodies a complex musical and cultural tradition. Flamenco is showed at the Ancient Theatre on 16 August with a Italian and Spanish company. Bealesymphony is a concert dedicated to the fou fab from Liverpool: Beatles. On 14 August at the Ancient Theatre in Taormina the Accademia Musicale di Palermo conducted by Salvatore Percacciolo and with the extraordinary partecipation of the soprano Carmen Avellone presen all the best songs by Beatles, re-arranged by Gaetano Randazzo, Giovanni Sollima, Alberto Maniaci, Antonio Fortunato, Giovanni D'Aquila: She loves you, All my lovin', Michelle, Eleanor Rigby, And I Love her, Something, Penny Lane, Let it Be, Hey Jude, Yestarday. At Palazzo Duchi of Saint Stephan three concerts

At Palazzo Duchi of Saint Stephan three concers: on 12 August Midnight Summer Music with Vincenzo Pavone a well-known Sicilian pianist who will play music by Scriabin, Chopin and Schumann; on 15 August TRibute to Miles Davis an evening dedicated to jazz music played by The St. Luke Big Band Orchestra at the trumpet the great Andy Gravish; on 17 August Souvenirs a homage to Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone, George Gerschwin and Leonard Bernstein by the flute of Alexander Fiterstein and the piano of Stephen Beck. Mauro Barreras the Tango's Emotion

Mauro Barreras anh his Company Emotion Tango on the stage of the Ancient Theatre in Taormina on 13 August for an evening dedicated to the Argentinian Tango. Argentine Tango consists of a variety of styles that developed in different regions and eras, and in response to the crowding of the venue and even the fashions in clothing. [link]


Tosca directed by Enrico Castiglione

Great expectation and sold out for Tosca by Giacomo Puccini directed by Enrico Castiglione on 8 and 10 August at the Ancient Theatre in Taormina. An exceptional cast: Martin Serafin (Tosca); Marcello Giordani (Cavaradossi); Alessandro Guerzoni (Angelotti);Angelo Nardinocchi(Sacrestan)Aldo Bruni (Spoletta) and Renato Bruson in the role of Scarpia. Le Ceneri di Gramsci concludes Taormina Arte Theatre

On the 3rd August at the Congress Palace Taormina Arte Theatre finishes with Le Ceneri di Gramsci. The show was born from the meeting of two protagonists of the Italian scene: Virgilio Sieni and Sandro Lombardi. For the first time the choreographer and the actor work together to create a piece of theatre where dance and acting are in constant dialogue, and where the maturity of the two men’s researches will amplify. Alessandro Preziosi: "to be or not to be"

Hamlet by William Shakespeare at the Ancient Theatre on 19 and 20 July. In the Hamlet's role Alessandro Preziosi and in the Polonio's role Silvio Orlando. Two more well-known Italian actors are: Francesco Branciaroli and Carla Cassola.The play is directed by Armando Pugliese.Hamlet is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1599 and 1601. The theatre season 2008 of Taormina Arte goes on with O Cunto d'ò Surdato from the Histoire du soldat by Ramuz on 24 and 25 July at the Congress Palace. The main character is Lello Arena. Other roles are played by Yari Gugliucci, Bianca D'Amato, Barbara Giiordano. Live Music composed and played by eight members of an orchestra conducted by Orazio Tuccella. Then on 25 and 26 July always at the Congress Palace La Coda dell'Oca by Andrea Genovese. Main characters: Francesca Andò and Gianfranco Quero. Director Gianni Fortunato. [link]

At last we reached the harbour. The sea voyage had been long and dangerous. Sometimes it seemed to be off course, the tools for the navigation were “crazy”, the food in the storeroom was in short supply. But at the end of the tiring voyage, the moment of the landing in the harbour arrived. [link]


La Favola di Amore e Psiche by Renato Giordano

The tale of Cupid and Psyche from The Golden Ass by Apuleio will be showed on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 July. The play is directed by Renato Giordano with one of the most famous Italian actor Peppe Barra and a well-known dancer and coreographer Andrè De La Roche. Being a tale in the cast there are also dancers and musicians. [link]


Performances at the Duchi Santo Stefano Palace

In the garden of the Duchi Santo Stefano Palace six performances from 27th July to 3rd August: 9 maggio 1978, Oltre il limite, Per mosse d'anima, La Spartenza and Ferragosto...caldi pizzini. 9 may 1978 was the dark Italian night's story, that of the 9th of May 1978, the night of Caetani street, of the corpse of Aldo Moro, the sunrise of a state funeral. The corpse of the president of the Democrazia Cristiana (Italian Christian Democrats, DC),who had been sentenced to death by BR, was found, riddled with bullets in the luggage rack of a red Renault 4 in Caetani Street. Salomè directed and personalized by Cicciò

Salomè is a premiere created and directed by Giampiero Cicciò. Music by Giovanni Renzo. The cast is composed by: Annibale Pavone,Carmen Panarello, Luca Fiorino, Angelo Campolo e Federica De Cola. Cicciò says: "I like to think at Salome as a girl in love with John’s voice, with the Word (that heralds), not with John himself as in Wilde’s interpretation. I see the saint throwing a stone against the girl that want only to listen to the message of the impenetrable prophet dressed with camel’s hair who screams in the desert… but yet it’s not time for the compassionate Christ, to whom John can’t even undo his sandals’ strings, the Christ who defends the prostitutes too, who will bring all of us with him on the cross. The multi media performance Metamorphodis by Elena Sgarlata will be showed on 31 July at the Congress Palace.The metamorphosis is a process of complete transformation of an organism from a being to a different and unrecognizable one. [link]


Antony and Cleopatra on 17 and 18 July

Antony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare at the Congress Palace on 17 and 18 July. The main characters are played by Francesco Branciaroli (Antony) and Isabella Giannone (Cleopatra). Francesco Branciaroli himself directs the play. Antony and Cleopatra stands as one of Shakespeare's most poetic plays. It is noted for its evocative word paintings and vivid hyperbole. It is also regarded by many as a problem play, presenting as it does the ambiguity and ambivalence of life without providing clear or comfortable answers. [link]
