Peter Weir

Nato a Sydney, Peter Weir intraprende la carriera di cineasta dirigendo tre cortometraggi, tutti premiati,e il suo primo lungometraggio Le macchine che distrussero Parigi, un anticonformistico film comico-horror tratto da un suo racconto. Il primo successo a livello internazionale giunge nel 1975 con Picnic at Hanging Rock, che desta attenzione in tutto il mondo e si impone come il film australiano di maggior successo di quel decennio. Due anni dopo Weir gira L’ ultima onda, con Richard Chamberlain nella parte di un avvocato ossessionato da sogni ricorrenti. Segue nel 1978 L’Uomo di Stagno. La pellicola successiva Gli Anni Spezzati, narra la storia di due ragazzi australiani presi dal fervore idealistico che accompagnò lo scoppio della prima guerra mondiale; il film fa incetta di premi e diventa un successo commerciale in tutto il mondo. Nel 1983 Weir torna a collaborare con Mel Gibson, uno dei protagonisti de Gli anni spezzati, in Un anno vissuto pericolosamente, che vede nel cast Sigourney Weaver e Linda Hunt, vincitrice dell’Oscar alla miglior attrice non protagonista con un’interpretazione rimasta indimenticabile. Nel 1985 dirige Witness - Il Testimone, un giallo particolarissimo in cui un bambino assiste involontariamente a un omicidio, sconvolgendo la comunità amish in cui vive. Il film viene candidato all’Oscar in otto categorie, fra cui quelle relative al miglior film e al miglior regista. A metà anni ’80 Weir si trasferisce negli Stati Uniti dove realizza altre opere di grande successo. Nel 1989 presenta a Venezia Dead Poets Society (L’attimo fuggente), grande successo internazionale che gli fa meritare un’altra candidatura all’Oscar per la regia, oltre a numerosi premi. Nel 1993 Weir gira Fearless - Senza Paura, un film drammatico con Jeff Bridges, Rosie Perez, Isabella Rossellini e John Turturro che descrive le diverse reazioni di un gruppo di persone di fronte a una tragica perdita. Torna a Venezia nel 1998 con Truman Show, la storia di un uomo che, a sua insaputa, vive nella soap opera più lunga e seguita della storia televisiva.

Born in Sydney, Peter Weir began his career by shooting three short films, all of which received awards, and his first feature length film, The Cars that Ate Paris, a comic horror movie based on a story of his. International success arrived in 1975 with Picnic at Hanging Rock, which then went on to become the most successful Australian film of the decade. The Last Wave came two years later, starring Richard Chamberlain as a lawyer obsessed by recurring dreams. His following film, Gallipoli, starring Mel Gibson, tells the story of two young Australian men caught up in the idealistic fervour of World War I. The film received numerous awards and was a worldwide success. In 1983 Weir worked with Gibson again, in The Year of Living Dangerously, also starring Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hunt, in an unforgettable performance which won her an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress. In 1985 Weir made Witness, a thriller about a young boy who witnesses a murder, thus unbalancing the Amish community he lives in. The film was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Film and Best Director. Peter Weir moved to the United States in the mid Eighties, directing a string of successful films. At the 1989 Venice Film Festival he presented Dead Poet’s Society, an international success which earned him yet another Oscar nomination, as well as numerous prizes. Fearless came next, starring Jeff Bridges, Rosie Perez, Isabella Rossellini and John Turturro, a film about the different reactions of people faced with tragic loss. Weir returned to Venice in 1998 with The Truman Show, the story of a man who, unawares, lives inside the longest running and most successful soap opera in history.
