Il
ventiseienne Robert Sarkies ha diretto il suo primo film, Snap, Sizzle and Bang
all’età di dieci anni. A quindici vantava già una lunga filmografia. A quei tempi
la sua passione per il cinema era talmente grande che durante i giorni di scuola preferiva
non mangiare per mettere da parte i soldi per girare i suoi film con l’aiuto dei
compagni. I suoi cortometraggi ottengono un grande successo internazionale. Dream
Makers, vince il Primo Premio alla Semana de Cine Experimental Festival di Madrid; Flames
from the Heart, ottiene un grande successo di vendite, e Signing Off, vince sei
premi internazionali, incluso il Primo Premio del Festival del Cinema Internazionale di
Montreal. Scarfies è il suo primo lungometraggio.
Twenty six year old
Robert Sarkies made his first film, Snap, Sizzle and Bang at the age of ten. By the
age of fifteen he already had a prolific filmography, making film after film with school
friends. His passion for filmmaking was so great, that throughout his school days Sarkies
didn’t eat, preferring to put his lunch money towards his films.
Scarfies is writer/director Robert Sarkies’ long awaited feature film debut,
following international acclaim for three of his short films: Dream Makers , (First
Prize at the Semana de Cine Experimental Festival in Madrid); Flames from the Heart,
(a 1995 top-ten seller for the New Zealand Film Commission), and Signing Off,
(recipient of six international awards including First Prize at the Montreal International
Film Festival). Signing Off also became the New Zealand Film Commission’s
highest selling short film of 1997. |

La stagione universitaria è appena
cominciata. Cinque studenti neozelandesi si mettono alla ricerca di un alloggio economico
e dopo qualche ricerca trovano una casa abbandonata e decidono di stabilircisi. Qualche
tempo dopo, nella cantina, scoprono una piantagione di marijuana che vale una fortuna e,
senza troppi indugi, decidono di approfittarne. Ma un giorno il "legittimo"
proprietario della droga ritorna e pretende di essere risarcito. I ragazzi, colti dal
panico, lo rinchiudono in cantina. Ma una situazione del genere è intollerabile, gli
umori vacillano e trovare una soluzione sembra impossibile: che fare di un uomo che
minaccia di ucciderli non appena liberato e che rivuole il denaro ormai speso?
An apparently uncomplicated windfall turns
into a horrifying series of violent events as five assorted students of the University of
Otago, in Dunedin, occupy an abandoned house. Having discovered a flourishing indoor
marijuana plantation, they decide to harvest and sell the crop, only to spend their money
and return home to find that the plantation’s original owner has come back. He is
locked in the basement as the five decide what to do next. The situation plummets as the
group fails to find a solution, and relationships between the five very different
characters deteriorate. |
