| Darrell James Roodt Nato a Johannesburg nel 1962, Darrell James Roodt studia arte drammatica
alluniversità del Witwatersrand. Nel 1986 dirige il suo primo film A Place of
Weeping, considerato una delle pietre miliari del cinema di protesta contro
lapartheid, seguito da City of Blood (1987), Tenth of a Second
(1987) e The Stick (1988), un film pacifista che racconta i raid sudafricani
nellAngola. Il film viene bandito in Sud Africa, ma ottiene larghi consensi dalle
giurie di importanti festival internazionali. Nel 1989 gira il più intimista Jobmane,
successivamente, nel 1992 Sarafina, tratto da un musical di Mbongeni Ngema a
sostegno dei diritti razziali: un altro grandissimo successo. Dal 1993 al 1997 dirige Fatherhood,
una commedia realizzata negli Stati Uniti con Patrick Swayze, Cry the Beloved Country
(1995) e Dangerous Ground (1997). Darrell ha anche diretto alcuni episodi della
celebre serie televisiva Soul City. Al momento si trova a Cape Town, impegnato
nelle riprese di Second Skin, con Natasha Henstridge e Peter Fonda. |

Born in Johannesburg in 1962, Darrell James Roodt
studied Drama at the University of the Witwatersrand. He began his film career with one of
the milestones of anti-apartheid cinema, A Place of Weeping (1986), followed by City
of Blood (1987) and Tenth of a Second (1987), and then The Stick (1988),
an anti-war film which exposed South Africas cross border raids into Angola. The
film was banned in South Africa, but received accolades at international film festivals.
The more intimate Jobman (1989) came next, and then the immensely successful Sarafina
(1992), based on Mbongeni Ngemas musical. Fatherhood (1993), a comedy shot in
the United States starring Patrick Swayze, was followed by Cry the Beloved Country
(1995) and Dangerous Ground (1997). Darrell also directed several episodes of the
popular television series Soul City. He is at present directing Second Skin,
a feature film shot in Cape Town starring Natasha Henstridge and Peter Fonda.
