Born in Ballymena, Ireland in 1952, Liam Neeson made his acting debut in 1976 in the play The Risen People. Two years later he moved to Dublin and began performing classics at the Abbey Theatre, where he was spotted by director John Boorman who cast him in Excalibur. Neeson’s first leading role came in 1990 in the motion picture Darkman. Excellent performances in Leap of Faith, as well as Husbands and Wives, led to him being chosen for the role of Oskar Schindler in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s list. For this role Neeson would be nominated for the Academy Award and the Golden Globe. In 1993 he made his Broadway debut in Anna Christie for which he would be nominated for a Tony. Nell marked his return to the big screen, starring opposite Jodie Foster. Over the next two years Neeson would play characters close to his roots, as eighteenth century Scottish Highlander Rob Roy and as Irish revolutionary leader Michael Collins.
1996 saw him starring opposite Meryl Streep in Before and After, followed by Les Misérables. Neeson played Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in director George Lucas’ much anticipated Star Wars prequel The Phantom Menace, and also starred in the supernatural thriller The Haunting, based on the classic Shirley Jackson novella The Haunting of Hill House.
