Jane Campion

Jane Campion è nata nel1954 a Wellington, in Nuova Zelanda. Dopo aver studiato pittura e scultura ed essersi laureata in antropologia, entra allaAustralian Film and Television School dove realizza i cortometraggi Peel, Passionless Moments e A Girl’s Own Story, girato per il diploma. Nel 1984 scrive e dirige per la Women’s Film Unit il mediometraggio di 26 minuti After Hours c h e vince il XL Elders Award e il premio per il best Short Fiction al Festival di Melbourne 1985. L’anno seguente gira per la televisione Two Friends sceneggiato da Helen Garner. Nel 1986 Jane Campion è la rivelazione del Festival di Cannes. Passionless Moments, A Girl’s Own Story e Two Friends, proiettati nella sezione Un certain regard, ottengono un grande successo mentre Peel vince la Palma d’Oro per il miglior cortometraggio. Nel 1993 è la prima donna a vincere la prestigiosa Palma d’Oro al Festival di Cannes con Lezioni di piano, che le frutta anche un Oscar per la migliore sceneggiatura. Nel 1996 gira The Portrait of a Lady con Nicole Kidman e John Malkovich, seguito nel 1999 da Holy Smoke con Harvey Keitel e Kate Winslet, per il quale ha ricevuto una candidatura per il Leone d’Oro di Venezia. L’uscita del suo prossimo film, In the Cut, con Nicole Kidman, è prevista per il 2001.

Jane Campion was born in 1954 in Wellington, New Zealand. After having studied painting and sculpture , and having obtained a BA in anthropology, she attended the Australian Film and Television School, where she made the short films Peel, Passionless Moments and A Girl’s Own Story.
In 1984 she wrote and directed the 26 minute film After Hours for the Women’s Film Unit, which won the XL Elders Award as well as the Best Short Fiction award at the Melbourne Festival of 1995.
In 1996 she took the Cannes Festival by storm, thrilling audiences with Passionless Moments, A Girl’s Own Story and Two Friends, all shown in the Certain Regard section, and winning the Palme D’Or for best short film with Peel.
That same year Two Friends, shot in 1995, was presented at several Festivals, including Sidney, Edinburgh and Melbourne, and in 1997 went on to win three Australian Film Institute Awards, for Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.
In 1989 she made her feature film debut in Cannes with Sweetie, winning the Georges Sadoul Award for Best Foreign Film, as well as the Australian Critics’ Award for Best Director and Best Film.
An Angel At My Table, a dramatization based on the autobiographies of author Janet Frame, won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1990, as well as numerous other awards. In 1993 The Piano made Jane Campion the first woman to win the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes. She also captured an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay at the 1993 Oscars, while being nominated for Best Director.
In 1996 she shot The Portrait of a Lady starring Nicole Kidman and John Malkovich, followed by Holy Smoke in 1999, nominated for a Golden Lion in Venice. Her latest film, In the Cut, again starring Nicole Kidman, is due out in 2001.
